THE STATE OF HEMP POLICY RIGHT NOW
Federal: hemp policy in Washington
Federal hemp policy is moving quickly, and two active campaigns need your voice. First, ask your representative to cosponsor the bipartisan Lawful Hemp Protection Act, which would replace the federal hemp ban scheduled to take effect in November with a national framework for responsible hemp regulation.
Second, urge your senators to preserve the temporary hemp extension in the Continuing Resolution. Keeping the extension in place would give Congress more time to pursue lasting rules that protect consumers, businesses, and continued access to legal hemp products.

North Carolina: a victory and the road ahead
HB 328 did not advance to a House vote after hemp businesses, employees, consumers, and advocates made their voices heard across the state. The conference report would have imposed severe product restrictions and threatened much of North Carolina’s legal hemp market.
This is a meaningful victory, but it is not the end of the conversation. Lawmakers may revisit hemp policy, and federal changes could reshape the issue again. The path forward should protect minors and consumers through responsible age limits, testing, labeling, and enforcement without eliminating legal products or the small businesses built around them.

What's the difference between the federal and NC hemp fights?
The federal fight centers on the Farm Bill reauthorization and how hemp-derived cannabinoids are defined nationwide. The NC fight is about specific bills moving through
the state legislature. Both matter, and you can act on both.
What does “responsible regulation” mean, versus a ban?
Responsible regulation means age limits, mandatory testing, and clear labeling. Those rules protect consumers while keeping legal products available. A ban simply removes
safe, tested products from the legal market to the black market.

Can I schedule an in-person meeting with a legislator?
Yes, and we'd encourage it. In-person meetings are the most effective way to be heard. The action resources walk you through how to request one.
Is hemp still legal?
Hemp is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. State rules vary, so check your local and state regulations.
What is the difference between hemp, cannabis, marijuana, and THC?
Cannabis is the plant. Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis, but hemp contains 0.3% Delta 9 THC or less by dry weight, while marijuana contains more. THC is the cannabinoid most commonly associated with cannabis. Federal and state laws regulate these products differently, making clear, responsible hemp policy important.
